Project Profile: I-465
The Project
I-465 is a highly trafficked beltway that circles Indianapolis. Upon arriving on the jobsite, Rodney (the AMI field support engineer) reviewed the J-Band checklist with the paving crew and INDOT personnel who were present.
This installment of J-Band was scheduled to be applied at 1.51 lb./ft. and 18” wide. Just four minutes after applying, J-Band had cooled to 120°F and was able to take traffic without tracking.
The surface course was paved with 2” of a SMA.
The Results
After paving, J-Band was measured to migrate about 1" up into the overlay height. This is exactly what the material is designed to do-- melt on contact with HMA, migrate upwards, and fill air voids. With the density at the joint increased, this part of the pavement will be less vulnerable to the destructive intrusion of air and water, ensuring a long-lasting pavement for INDOT. The J-Band team will monitor this project and report on J-Band's performance over the course of the coming years.
