The Project
I-480 is a four-lane divided interstate in Hudson, OH. Vince and Jim, AMI employees who were there to support the project, reviewed the J-Band checklist with the paving foreman and ODOT inspector before work began.
J-Band was scheduled to be applied 15” wide at a rate of 1.40 lb./ft. onto an intermediate asphalt surface. The surface course was paved with 1 ½” of an ODOT 447 12.5mm Type B PG 70-22 mix. Upward migration of J-Band was measured at ½” to 5/8” prior to compaction. A strong shadow could also be seen, which is another sign of upward migration of the material.
The Results
On a high volume road like I-480, maintenance and reconstruction can cause major delays and inconveniences. It’s ideal for these roads to require maintenance as infrequently as possible. With J-Band protecting the longitudinal joints on this interstate, ODOT will enjoy a longer life from the longitudinal joints on this interstate.
