Project: Profile: I-70

The Project

I-70 is an east-west interstate that passes through downtown Indianapolis. The road was completely closed for this project to accommodate for concrete and bridge repairs, overhead sign replacements, and drain cleaning.

J-Band was applied to milled concrete in the westbound lanes and milled asphalt in the eastbound lanes. The scheduled application rate was 1.51 lb./ft. at a width of 18”. Just two minutes after application, J-Band had cooled to 130°F. A total of 16,359 feet were applied on this project.

The surface course was paved with 2” of an SMA. After paving the surface course, J-Band was measured to migrate upwards into this overlay. Shadowing, a visual sign of upwards migration, was also seen.

The Results

A total of 16,359 feet were applied on this project. While it’s still too early to see any long-term results, the J-Band team will monitor this project over the years to see how J-Band performs. After a few tough winters in Indiana, there will be a noticable difference between areas that were treated with J-Band and those that were not.
