The Project
I-74 is an interstate located in western Illinois, not far from the city of Champaign. On the morning of June 23, the tanker truck that would transport J-Band was filled at the AMI plant in Indianapolis. Upon arriving at the job site, a rate check was performed to ensure that J-Band would be applied at the ideal rate.
The target rate of application on this job was 1.47 lb./ft. (+/- 15%). After being applied, J-Band cooled from 307°F to 180°F in just three minutes. Fifteen minutes after application, a pickup truck was driven across the J-Band and no evidence of tracking or pick up was seen.
The surface course was paved with 1½” of PG 70-22 9.5 mm “E” N90 mix. Upward migration of J-Band into the mix was noted, with shadowing seen by the crew.
The Results
After paving, the HMA directly over the J-Band had a soft and spongy feeling. This is a characteristic sign that J-Band has migrated upwards into the mix. This indicates a successful application. This project will be monitored by the J-Band team over the years to see how J-Band performs on I-74.
