The Project
This project is located at the interchange of I-70 and I-77. Jim, the AMI field support engineer on this job, met with the project manager, superintendent, and other personnel before work began. They discussed how the paving operation would work with J-Band and decided to do a trial application in the staging area. Three separate test applications were done in the staging area. Once a comfort level was reached with the application rate, the crew moved out to the project site.
J-Band was scheduled to be applied at 1.47 lb./ft. at a width of 18”. It was a hot a humid evening, and it took J-Band about 10 minutes to cool to 107°F. Haul trucks were able to cross the J-Band shortly after this without pulling it up.
The surface course was paved with a 1 ½” overlay of 12.5mm PG 70-22. Material compacted over the J-Band was soft and spongy for a short time after paving. This is a telltale sign of J-Band migrating up into the overlay. By the time the finish roller operator completed his work, the mix had hardened. J-Band was observed to migrate upwards into this overlay height.
The Results
Between the high traffic volume of the road and the brutality of Illinois winters, I-77 has to be tough. With J-Band preventing longitudinal joint failure, IDOT will see substantial maintenance savings and fewer headaches associated with this road. The J-Band team will continue to monitor and report on conditions on I-77.
