The Project
I-80 is an interstate located in rural northwest Illinois. J-Band was scheduled to be applied at a rate of 1.00 lb./ft. onto a binder leveling course. This light application rate was made possible via a special provision.
After applying, J-Band cooled to 185°F in just four minutes. The surface course was paved with 2” of an SMA mix composed of 3⁄8“ to ½” slag stone, manufactured sand, and 5% RAS. The total PG content of this mix was targeted at 5.7%.
The Results
Jim, the field support engineer on this job, noted excellent J-Band migration up into the SMA overlay. This means that J-Band has successfully moved upwards into the longitudinal joint and increased the density of the pavement there. The J-Band team will monitor I-80 over the years and collect data on J-Band’s performance.
