The Project
This project was comprised of two separate streets in downtown Toledo. Both Michigan Street and Erie Street receive a lot of stop and go traffic and heavy foot traffic.
J-Band was scheduled to be applied to this project at a rate of 1.22 lb./ft. at a width of 15”. Due to the high temperatures and high volume of traffic, busy intersections were skipped on Michigan Street. After discussing with the City Inspector, it was decided that these areas would be treated as control sections to contrast with J-Band. By the end of the day, a total of 6,088 feet had been applied.
The next day, the surface course was paved with a 12.5 mm PG 64 mix. It was compacted to a depth of 1½”. J-Band was observed to migrate up to 5/8” into this overlay. The mat over the J-Band was soft and spongy for a short while after paving. It hardened in about 45 minutes.
The Results
The project completed successfully and J-Band was observed to migrate up to 5/8″ into the overlay. These city streets are now set up for success- and an anticipated 15+ years before the joints will need maintenance or reconstruction. The J-Band team will continue to monitor these roads as the years pass in order to track J-Band’s performance.
