Project Profile: Towanda Barnes Road

The Project

Towanda Barnes Road is located on the east side of Bloomington/Normal Illinois. It consists of four lanes with a bi-directional center turn lane. This project included a 2” milling and resurfacing with a ½” level binder and ½” of HMA Surface Course mix D N70.

Upon arriving on the job, Tim Zahrn, the AMI field support engineer, reviewed the J-Band checklist with the prime contractor and agency representatives.

J-Band was applied at 18” wide between the binder course and the surface curse with a target rate of 1.47 lb./ft. All four joints were treated with J-Band on this road. J-Band cooled from 300°F to 174°F in just five minutes.

The Results

Tim Zahrn, the field support engineer on this job, noted that this application was done very consistently by the Illiana crew. After paving the surface course, J-Band was seen the migrate up to ¾” into the overlay height. The total migration height after compaction is between 50-75% of the overlay height and will can be measured directly from core samples.

The area above the J-Band was soft and spongy. Shadowing in this area was also seen. This soft texture and visible shadowing are both telltale signs of J-Band migration. This means that J-Band was performing as expected and the joint is now protected from the intrusion of air and water.
