Toledo’s Busiest Street Remains Well-Protected After Five Years

Published January 31, 2024

Before the centerline of a road is created, J-Band® can help save three of the most important things to any engineer, applicator or community: time, money and lives. J-Band is Asphalt Materials, Inc.’s (AMI) void reducing asphalt membrane (VRAM). It extends the life of pavements by as much as five years and returns 3-5 times its initial cost.

If you could invest in something that saves time, money and lives, would you? The city of Toledo invested in J-Band five years ago on Erie Street, and it is still paying off.

Project Details

  • Owner: City of Toledo, Ohio
  • Prime Paving Contractor: The Shelly Company
  • Applicator: Specialized Construction, Inc. (SCI)
  • Location: Erie Street, Downtown Toledo
  • Date Constructed: July 6, 2018
  • Date Reviewed: January 25, 2024
  • Weather Conditions Day of Review: Cloudy and cool, 39 degrees

AMI’s Support Engineer Chad Crosby reviewed Erie St. in downtown Toledo, Ohio, on January 25, 2024 – about five years after the initial project in 2018. This project spanned from Lafayette Street to Cherry Street.

Project Observations

The project is about five years old and is one of the busiest streets in downtown Toledo. The longitudinal joints in the road showed no sign of cracking, except a minimal crack one foot off the two middle lane joints.

There were no rumble strips installed on this project, and no raveling or flushing was observed. Therefore, no maintenance work including crack sealing or patching has been needed on the lane joints in the last five years.

Conclusion

The review of Erie Street in Toledo, Ohio, was deemed a success. J-Band is continuing to protect the road’s centerline joints without any further maintenance work. By investing in J-Band, agencies can save time and money with less road maintenance and protect workers by decreasing their time spent working on the roads in traffic.
