Since 2002, J-Band® has been helping roads last longer. As a Void Reducing Asphalt Membrane (VRAM) it is a materials approach and is unlike other treatments since it significantly reduces air voids in longitudinal joints from the bottom up. This extends the life of the joint and improves the entire pavement’s performance.
Unlike other joint treatments, J-Band® migrates upward, filling voids and fending off air and water, which can damage longitudinal joints.
J-Band® is applied prior to the paving process. Using an inline parallel spray bar, J-Band® is typically applied as an 18-inch-wide strip on top of the existing pavement under the eventual location of the longitudinal joint.
Englewood, Ohio Project
Our Specialty Products team is in charge of assisting, observing, overseeing, and inspecting J-Band® job sites. That said, our team recently helped with a VRAM application on June 15, 2023, in Englewood, Ohio at Union Boulevard. The project covered a five-mile stretch from US-40 South to Gateway Drive.
The VRAM application began at 7:15 a.m. and was applied where the centerline joint of the southbound lanes and the center of the turn lane will be. The total VRAM applied on site for this day was 1,025 gallons and is an ongoing project.
VRAM Application
Paving Application
The paving and priming of the roads began at 9:40 a.m. and was performed by Jurgensen and Specialized Construction Incorporated (SCI). The equipment that was used was a CAT 1055F paver and a 2 Bomag BW161AD steel drum roller. The team recorded the mix temperature and migration throughout the day. The project finished around 2:30 p.m. later that day.
NOTE: Once applied, VRAM is non-tracking in no more than 30 minutes after application. This means the roadways are ready for use. This allows for flexibility between the time that the VRAM has been applied and when the paving operation may begin.
J-Band® is a proven technology. An investment in J-Band® helps extend the life of pavements by as much as 5 years and returns 3-5x its initial cost. J-Band® is like an insurance policy. Since roads last longer, agencies can avoid costly, dangerous repairs.
Multiple DOTs have discovered that J-Band® doesn’t cost. It pays! Since 2002, J-Band® has been used to save infrastructure funds in 23 states and the District of Columbia.
